Shielding Gas Flow Calculator
Calculate recommended shielding gas flow rate and tank duration for MIG and TIG welding based on nozzle/cup size and conditions.
MIG and FCAW use nozzle sizing; TIG uses cup numbers.
Nozzle diameter on your MIG gun. 5/8" is the most common size.
Outdoor welding needs 25-50% more gas flow to compensate for air movement.
TIG requires 100% argon. MIG on steel uses 75/25 or CO2. Aluminum MIG needs 100% argon.
Larger tanks last longer and cost less per cubic foot. 80 cu ft is portable; 250 cu ft is a full shop cylinder.
